The program called for an outdoor court, a kitchen, family room, separate sleeping quarters and bathrooms for two families, and a garage for the clients ATV’s, boat and climbing gear.
THE SHED – Silver Spring, MD – 2008
The need for a woodshop/painting studio was unavoidable once we bought our own house and our family began to grow. I was building furniture out of our finished basement until we decided that the saw dust in the ducts was not the best for our lungs. My wife was painting out of the 3rd bedroom until we had our first born Eli which required the need for her space to become a guest room. I designed this accessory building to achieve the space necessary for the continued success of my wifes painting career and the passion to design/build and make furniture.

The Thompson Residence is designed as one home with two separate living quarters. One half is to be utilized as a permanent residence for the mother of the client and the other half will be a place for the client to stay when he goes back to the island. The long site and harsh hurricane climate determined the placement of the internal functions and the external glazing. The single slope roof will maximize the collection of rainwater. Photovoltaics on the roof are prevalent on the island and will be placed on the roof of this project to assist in cutting down energy costs.
